International experts exchanged ideas, research and practical applications of sustainable transport at the second annual TRANSIST 2011 conference on November 28 to December 2 in Istanbul.

The aim of “Public Transportation Week” was to encourage people to use public transportation, raise awareness about sustainable transport among children, and train municipalities on proper strategies for urban infrastructure.

The event was organized by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and IETT, the public bus company.

EMBARQ Turkey presented the following topics:

• "Improving Accessibility in Public Transportation - Case Study; Istanbul BRT Extension Between Avcilar-Beylikduzu,” prepared by EMBARQ Turkey's Elif Can Yüce and Sibel Bulay; presented by Elif Can Yüce

• “Creating a Performance Measurement System for the Public Transport System of Kocaeli," prepared by EMBARQ Turkey's Burhan Kocaman; Salih Kumbar, Kocaeli Municipality Head of Road Transport; Ovunc Yilmaz, Advisor to the Director of Transport Department; jointly presented by Burhan Kocaman and Salih Kumbar

• “Public Transport Improvements in the City of Kocaeli and Comparison of Improvement Scenarios,” prepared by Burhan Kocaman; Abdulmuttalip Demirel, Director of Transport Department; Ahmet Celebi, Head of Transport Planning Department; presented by Abdulmuttalip Demirel

• "The Effects of Public Transportation on Road Safety," prepared and presented by Sefik Elbeyli and Burhan Kocaman.

• “Historic Peninsula GEHL Study and HP Vision,” prepared and presented by Sibel Bulay.

Mümin Kahveci, the former general manager of IETT acknowledged Sibel Bulay as the thought leader of Istanbul Metrobus before her presentation about a vision for the Historic Peninsula.
