Results from EMBARQ's Road Safety Analysis for Arequipa was presented at Arequipa's First Regional Congress on the Problems of Transport, Transit and Safety, hosted by the Regional Council on Road Safety for Arequipa. Participants included regional and local government representatives from transport, road circulation, road safety, police and health.

Cesar Simborth, architect of the System of Integrated Transport in Arequipa (SIT-AQP) Project, presented the results of the Arequipa Road Safety Analysis, which was conducted in 2010 by EMBARQ with the help of road safety expert Carsten Wass of Consia Consultants.

The baseline study analyzed personal exposure to air pollution, physical activity and road safety in the city before the implementation of the Integrated Transport System in Arequipa (SIT-AQP) Project.

For the road safety portion of the baseline study, EMBARQ Andino and Carsten Wass analyzed 2,288 traffic accident reports from 2007-2009, provided by the Policía Nacional del Perú (PNP).

At the Congress, participants were well-informed of the need to improve road safety in Arequipa. The city has prepared its own Plan of Action for Road Safety, in response to the U.N.’s Decade of Action for Road Safety.

"The Congress brought together representatives from the various public and private sectors that will need to be involved if real change in Arequipa's road safety is to be achieved," EMBARQ Andino Project Coordinator Sybil Settlemyre said.

These sectors included the Regional Direction of Health-Arequipa, the Peruvian National Police-Arequipa, the Public Ministry (District Attorney), the Regional Government of Arequipa, the Provincial Municipality of Arequipa, and transport operators. Salomon Chavez, an independent consultant, joined Settlemyre to represent EMBARQ Andino at the event.
