The Context
Located near the Western coast of India, Pune is the country's educational capital, attracting nearly 200,000 students to study at its schools and universities. The city of 4.2 million people also boasts a robust automotive industry, as well as a growing software and information technology sectors.
EMBARQ identified Pune as a strategic fit for beginning its operations in India. Working with officials in Pune, EMBARQ developed a suite of sustainable transport indicators, allowing city officials to diagnose transport challenges—such as rapid car growth—and develop solutions to alleviate these problems. Pune has since developed a 15-kilometer bus-way funded by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. EMBARQ is now advising the city on ways it can improve the system as the city looks to add 88
kilometers of bus rapid transit to better serve its residents.
